Tania Culottes – Sew My Style

Janee Michal - Tania Culottes

I finished up this month with another great challenge. Sew My Style is a sewing challenge that I found on Instagram. Each month there are two patterns you can select from. The goal is to make it your own. January patterns were the Tania Culottes from Megan Nielsen patterns and the Kortney Bodysuit by Rad Patterns. I decided the Tania culottes is definitely more of my style.

Tania is described as a modern take on culottes which combines the practicality of shorts, however, they have the appearance of a skirt. It has a fitted waistband, an invisible side seam zipper, hidden front and back pleats, and deep side pockets. Yet the overall best feature for me is its shorts that look like a skirt. Who wouldn’t love that?

Fabric Selection

I searched my stash and found a nice lightweight woven crepe fabric that I picked up from Walmart a few months back. This was a part of their five yards for five dollar deals. I have not been successful in finding this deal lately. The fabric is black with white striped patterns. In addition to the fabric, you also need thread and a nine-inch invisible zipper.

The pattern consists of six pattern pieces. I would highly recommend a wider fabric as the main pieces are fairly wide. Sewing the Tania culottes was a breeze. The instructions are very well written and easy to follow. In addition, there are sew along instructions listed on their blog. I made no adjustments to the pattern.

Overall Review

Overall, I love the fit and the look of the culottes. They are very comfortable and lightweight. The weight of the fabric gave the culottes a great draping appearance which helps it look more like a skirt. Since it is cool outside, I paired my culottes with the Ponte knit top from Simplicity 8982. I made this top a few months back.
