I am so grateful when my schedule frees up a bit, and I have more time to sew. Pattern testing has become one of my new fun things to do. When I saw the post for the Gobi culottes by Itch To Stitch, I was a bit hesitant to apply. One, I do not wear shorts. Shall I saw, I have not worn shorts since the age of 27 or so. However, I listened to my gut and applied anyway. Saying if I get selected, then it was meant for me to make these culottes.
Fabric Selection
Thankfully it all worked out. These linen culottes are great for several reasons, but first let me get into the fabric selection. When I sewed up my sample for fitting purposes, I used a natural muslin fabric. However, when I made my final version, I used a 100% linen fabric. It is a Robert Kaufman fabric that has been in my stash for a few years.
I made my linen culottes on a size 10 for the waist, and a size 12 for the hips. When I made my muslin this was the perfect fit. I did not have to do any adjustments, which is completely rare in any pants or short patterns I have used in the past. Normally, I need to do an adjustment in the back crotch length. However, when I made my final version in the linen, it was a loose in the waist. I am more than sure this is because linen has much for give than muslin.
Overall Review
Overall, I love the Gobi culottes. The style is so cute with a lot of top stitching, side pockets, front pleats, and a buttoned fly closure. The only other supplies I needed was interfacing for the waistband, lining for the pocket, and seven buttons for the fly closure. These culottes are great and are cute dressed up or down depending on the top you wear with it. The length of the shorts are perfect to wear to the office. Many of the other testers extended the pattern to pants length which is also really cute. I already have plans to make another pair of these in smaller size.
